Why is Active Listening so Important?

Jan. 10th 2020

Active Listening is one of the most crucial Interpersonal Soft-Skills that’s essential in the workplace and in your personal life.

Active Listening is the practice of being completely focused & concentrated on what the speaker is saying so that communication is effective and efficient.

It sounds easy, right? Not so much… Many of us focus too much on the speaking part of communication and not enough on truly listening. We’ll teach you a number of theories, techniques, and tricks to become a truly excellent listener.

What happens when Active Listening isn’t applied?

 1.         You’re showing the speaker that you don’t value their time or what they’re saying.

2.         Miscommunications arise, which will cause future problems.

What are some benefits of Listening Actively?

Builds trust with people / strengthens your patience / Broadens your knowledge and perspective / Makes you more approachable & likable / Makes communication more efficient (less clarifying & misunderstandings) / resolve conflicts better / Strengthens your team / Provides further professional opportunities.

What are some of the most common mistakes we make when ‘listening’ to other people?

 1.         Daydreaming or thinking of something else while another person is speaking.

2.         Thinking of what to say next.

3.         Judging what the other person is saying without an open mind.

4.         Listening with a specific goal/outcome in mind.

5.         Looking at your phone or another object.

6.         Unaware that you’re actually not listening carefully.

In our Active Listening Workshops, we go through all of the above information in detail as well as teach you how to become a great Active Listener. The skills you’ll learn in our workshop will immediately change the way you think about communicating. You’ll see your professional and personal life improve as a result.
